Can Ozempic Affect Your Disability Insurance? GLP-1 Medications and Underwriting for Physicians

How Do GLP-1 Medications Affect Physician Disability Insurance?

GLP-1 medications have transformed treatment for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic conditions. As medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound become more common, physicians applying for individual disability insurance may wonder whether using a GLP-1 will affect underwriting.

The answer depends on the bigger health picture.

Underwriters Look Beyond the Prescription

Disability insurance underwriting evaluates risk associated with your ability to work and practice medicine. Underwriters may review medical diagnoses, medications, blood pressure, laboratory results, specialist evaluations, follow-up appointments, and height and weight trends.

With a GLP-1 medication, an important question is why it was prescribed.

An underwriter may evaluate whether the medication is being used in connection with obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, or another medical condition.

The prescription itself is only one component of the underwriting review. The underlying diagnosis, overall health history, and how successfully the condition is being managed may be more significant.

Why Stability Matters in Disability Insurance Underwriting

A recurring theme in disability insurance underwriting is stability.

Underwriters generally want to understand whether a treatment plan is working and whether appropriate follow-up care is occurring.

If a physician begins a GLP-1 medication, the underwriting review may consider questions such as:

  • Has treatment been well tolerated?
  • Has the underlying condition improved?
  • Are follow-up appointments occurring consistently?
  • Have relevant laboratory results improved?
  • Has weight stabilized?
  • If treatment stopped, has the improvement continued?

The same principle applies beyond GLP-1 medications. Whether an applicant has a history involving blood pressure, back pain, anxiety, or another condition, consistent medical care can help establish a clearer underwriting picture.

Does Weight Loss Immediately Improve Underwriting?

Not necessarily.

Weight loss can improve an applicant’s overall health profile, but underwriters may also want evidence that the lower weight represents a sustainable new baseline.

In some situations, full underwriting credit for a lower weight may not be available until that weight has been maintained for approximately 12 months.

This does not necessarily mean a physician cannot apply for disability insurance during that period. Rather, the carrier may evaluate the current weight alongside the applicant’s prior weight history, treatment, and overall medical record.

Will Ozempic or Wegovy Automatically Cause an Exclusion?

No.

Taking Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, or another GLP-1 medication does not automatically mean a physician will receive a higher premium, policy exclusion, or postponement.

Individual underwriting outcomes vary by applicant and carrier.

The underwriter generally wants enough context to understand the reason for treatment, the applicant’s response, related health conditions, and whether the overall medical picture is stable.

Why Timing Can Matter

If you are considering starting a GLP-1 medication and also expect to apply for physician disability insurance, understanding the underwriting process beforehand can be helpful.

Disability insurance underwriting evaluates the medical history documented when you apply. A newly started treatment may create additional questions simply because there is less history available to demonstrate how well the treatment is working.

The goal is not to make healthcare decisions based on insurance. Appropriate medical care should come first. But understanding how medical history, treatment changes, and follow-up documentation may be evaluated can help physicians approach disability insurance planning with greater clarity.

Protecting Your Future Income Starts With Understanding Your Options

GLP-1 medications are changing healthcare, and disability insurance underwriting continues to evolve alongside medical treatment. For physicians, the important lesson is that underwriting generally considers the entire health picture rather than a single medication.

Good documentation, consistent follow-up, appropriate medical care, and demonstrated stability can all provide important context during the underwriting process.

You don’t need to make a decision today, but you do need to understand your options.

The strongest disability insurance decisions are often made before limitations, diagnoses, or career changes narrow what is available.

Clarity creates confidence. And confidence helps physicians make stronger decisions about protecting the income they’ve worked years to build.

If you’re reviewing your disability insurance, preparing for private practice, or evaluating your income protection strategy, understanding the details now can create more flexibility later.
